Designed during Sottsass’s highly experimental period with Poltronova, the Sandretta mirror combines a strong geometric composition with an unusually sculptural approach to a functional everyday object. Its circular red lacquered mirror surround is suspended within an arched walnut structure, creating a striking contrast between vivid color and the warmth of natural wood.

The circular mirror is mounted on lateral brass pivots, allowing it to rotate along its horizontal axis and be positioned at different angles. This simple mechanical solution becomes an integral part of the design, emphasizing the relationship between the inner circular element and the architectural outer frame.

The SP63 Sandretta reflects Ettore Sottsass’s growing exploration of color, symbolism and unconventional form during the 1960s, anticipating ideas that would become increasingly central to his work for Poltronova and to the development of Italian Radical Design. The mirror belongs to the same fertile period of experimentation that would later lead to some of Sottsass’s most recognizable designs for the company.

This example retains its characteristic red lacquered circular frame, walnut structure and brass fittings and is presented in excellent vintage condition, with minor signs of age consistent with its history.
